Metallurgical

Metallography is the most reliable way of identifying the structure of a given product. Through processes such as cutting, mounting, grinding and polishing, a smooth specimen surface is obtained. Diamond Tool and Abrasives has been providing the metallurgical market our top-quality abrasive cut- off wheels, coated abrasive discs, belts, sheets and rolls, diamond and alumina slurries and paste, polishing pads and, cold and hot mounting powders and accessories for over 30 years.

Cut-off Wheels - Abrasive cutting has proven to be one of the most effective methods for sectioning materials for Metallographic sample preparation. Diamond Tool and Abrasives specialized cut-off wheels are available in diameters up to 20” in bond systems including calendared rubber, resin rubber, and resin, and utilizing Silicon Carbide, and Aluminum Oxide.

Diamond & CBN Wafering Blades - For applications which require greater precision and thin sectioning capability, Diamond Tool and Abrasives offers diamond and Cbn wafering blades to be used with a precision low speed wafering saw. Low concentration blades are suggested for hard brittle materials and ceramics, while high concentration blades are used with metallics.

Sectioning Accessories - Diamond Tool and Abrasives Offers Cutting /Lubricating Fluids / Coolants, & Dressings Sticks for your Metallographic Sectioning needs.

Coated Abrasives – Diamond Tool and Abrasives offers a complete line of Abrasive Discs for your Metallographic sample preparation needs. Our Discs feature premium graded silicon carbide bonded to a sturdy “C” weight paper backing available in plain and pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) backing. Diamond Tool and Abrasives Silicon Carbide abrasive discs are manufactured using the finest grading standards to avoid scratches from cross-contamination. Grit sizes are available from 60 grit through 1200 grit. These discs are also available in Aluminum Oxide and Zirconia Alumina grain types and in addition to discs they are available in sheets, rolls and abrasive belts.

Diamond and Suspensions and Paste – Diamond Tool and Abrasives diamond suspensions are low viscosity suspensions designed for high stock removal rates and precision finishes. They are water soluble, clean easily, and will not clog dispensing lines.

Diamond suspensions are available with either polycrystalline or monocrystalline diamond. Polycrystalline diamond has up to 300% more surface area than monocrystalline diamond resulting in much higher stock removal rates and finer scratch patterns. Polycrystalline diamond is recommended for hard materials, brittle coatings, or sample composed of mixed hardness.

Diamond Tool and Abrasives diamond compound paste is available in both natural and synthetic diamond. Both oil and water base paste can be selected. Color-coding is used to differentiate micron sizing. The paste can be provided in medium, standard and strong diamond concentrations. The standard packaging is a 5 gm or 18 gm plastic syringes. The syringe protects the paste from contamination and provides a convenient controlled method for application of the product. Diamond Tool and Abrasives diamond paste compounds are formulated from the highest quality diamond. The tight tolerance particle size distribution guarantees consistent results. The water/oil soluble paste not only cleans easily, but also works well with most lubricants.

ALUMINA POWDER and Slurries – Diamond Tool and Abrasives alumina powders are high purity, polishing powders designed for final polishing of most metallographic specimens. They are available in two different versions – standard and deagglomerated. The standard version is suggested for most applications. The deagglomerated version goes through an extra milling procedure to breakdown agglomerates and is recommended for final polishing of more critical applications. both versions are available in three different micron sizes: 0.05, 0.3 and 1.0 micron. Diamond Tool and Abrasives alumina slurry is formulated from the same high purity alumina used in our powders. These readymade slurries are not only easy to use, but guarantee consistent performance from lot to lot. Available in 0.05, 0.3 and 1.0 micron sizes, they are packaged in convenient to use 6 oz. bottles or gallon containers.

In addition to Alumina Powder and Slurries, Diamond Tool and Abrasives offers Colloidal Silica as an excellent polishing solution for producing scratch-free specimens. It employs a chemical/mechanical action which delivers perfect a finish on many materials. To achieve these fine finishes, the surface of the material being polished is chemically altered while very fine silica particles ranging from 0.02 – 0.06 micron remove the altered layer.

Polishing Pads – In conjunction with slurries and powdersDiamond Tool and Abrasives Polishing Pads are offered in a wide range of sizes and are made from different types of materials to accommodate almost any polishing application, including Metallographic, petrographic, fiber optics, and many more.

 Metallographic Mounting Material

Compression Mounting Materials

  • Phenolics - Phenolic material comes in three different colors - black, green and red. Phenolic material is economical, easy to use and cures quickly. Diamond Tool offers phenolic materials in convenient 5 lb containers, but can also be purchased in larger bulk containers as well.
  • Lucite - Lucite is a transparent compression mount material, which allows viewing into the specimen. Diamond Tool offers Lucite material in convenient 5-lb containers.
  • Diallyl Phthalate - This material is similar in nature to phenolic. It is blue in color, and has a glass filler, which helps provide better edge retention than the standard phenolics.

Cold mounting materials

  • Koldmount - Koldmount is a two part acrylic mounting system, which cures in approximately 30 minutes. Diamond Tool offers Koldmount mounting materials in convenient 1 lb and 5 lb containers.
  • Epoxy - Diamond Tool features an epoxy mounting system, which offers excellent edge retention and good abrasion resistance. The epoxy cures in approximately 30 minutes. Diamond Tool offers Epoxy material in convenient 32-ounce containers for the resin, and 16 ounce containers for the hardener.
  • Fast cure acrylic - This cold mount, two -part acrylic mounting system has good flow characteristics and good penetration into holes and recesses. The cure time is approximately 5 minutes for this product.
  • High performance mounting compound -This high performance-mounting compound has excellent flow characteristics due to its low viscosity. The compound produces sample mounts of high hardness and density with superior abrasion resistance and edge retention.

Metallographic Mounting Accessories

  • Mold release - Diamond Tool and Abrasives offers mold release for hot and cold mounting applications. This mold release is used to help eject the specimen clearly from either the mounting press or mold. Mold release is available in aerosol spray form.

  • Specimen clips - Specimen clips are used to support specimens while the mounting material cures. Diamond Tool offers both plastic and metal clips, which are packed in 100-piece containers.
  • Mold cups - Mold cups are disposable molding forms. Diamond Tool offers these mold cups in 1", 1.25" and 1.5" sizes.
